The most striking change: every icon now carries a smooth color transition. Gmail flows through Google’s primary palette plus green; Google Meet shifts to a yellow-green aura; Google Chat adopts a green gradient; and Google Docs transitions from flat blue to a blue-purple blend. The redesign visually signals Google’s pivot toward artificial intelligence, branding experts say.

'The AI Gradient Everywhere'

According to Ben Sherwood, creative partner at Design Bridge and Partners, the tech industry is witnessing a collective shift from flat design to what he calls the “AI gradient everywhere” aesthetic. “Gradients convey depth, complexity, and a sense of intelligence — all qualities companies want to associate with AI,” Sherwood told reporters.

The trend is not limited to Google. Apple Intelligence, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta AI all feature gradient logos. Microsoft recently added gradients to its Office suite icons. Google itself updated its iconic “G” logo with a four-color gradient last September.

Background: From Flat to Fluid

Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, designers have struggled to visually represent AI in a way that inspires trust and curiosity. Three distinct logo shapes have emerged: plain circles (Meta, Grok), twinkling sparkles (Gemini, Adobe Photoshop, Grammarly), and swirling “nebulous voids” (OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity) — sometimes humorously called “AI buttholes.”

Gradients, while not new (Instagram and Apple Music used them years ago), have become the defining motif for big tech’s AI push. “It’s an easy way to signal innovation without alienating users,” said Sarah Lin, a brand strategist at Branding First. “Gradients feel modern but not threatening.”

What This Means

The new Workspace logos are more than a cosmetic update. They represent Google’s strategy to visually unify its ecosystem under an AI umbrella. As AI features like Gemini integrate deeper into Gmail, Docs, and Drive, the gradient design prepares users for a more intelligent, adaptive experience.

For competitors, the move pressures them to differentiate their visual language. “If every AI product uses gradients, it becomes hard to stand out,” Lin warned. “But for now, the gradient is the safe bet — it signals progress without committing to a strange shape.”

Users can expect the new icons to appear gradually over the coming weeks. Google has not announced when the rollout will complete, but the change is already live on many devices.
