Breaking: Major Philanthropic Initiative Announced
In a landmark move aimed at tackling rural poverty, a prominent philanthropist today launched the Rural Guaranteed Minimum Income Initiative, backed by an immediate $21 million in donations to over 30 nonprofits. The announcement follows a year-old pledge asking Americans to support both immediate relief and long-term solutions to preserve the American Dream.

“From those to whom much is given, much is expected,” said the philanthropist, quoting Mary Gates. The initiative will focus on providing guaranteed income to rural communities while addressing urgent needs like food, housing, and healthcare.
Immediate $21M Disbursement
The funds have already been distributed to a wide range of organizations, including Team Rubicon ($1M), Children’s Hunger Fund ($1M), The Trevor Project ($1M), and Planned Parenthood ($1M). Other recipients include Mastodon ($1.5M), Internet Archive ($1M), and the Rural Democracy Initiative ($100k).
“We have everything we need,” said the philanthropist’s partner, Betsy, in a recent podcast. “How do we make sure everybody has what they need?” That question has driven the family’s giving since early 2024.
Background: The ‘Share the American Dream’ Pledge
One year ago, the philanthropist issued a challenge to Americans: pledge to support organizations helping those in need, and within five years, commit time or funds to longer-term efforts that keep the American Dream fair and attainable. The family set an example by initially donating $8 million to eight charities in January 2025.
“We saw immediate needs becoming so urgent that we quickly added another $13 million in donations within a few months,” the philanthropist explained. The total now stands at $21 million across 32 organizations.
What This Means
The Rural Guaranteed Minimum Income Initiative signals a shift toward structural solutions, moving beyond reactive charity. By targeting rural areas—often overlooked by large philanthropic efforts—the program aims to break cycles of poverty through direct cash transfers and community support.

“You can’t take a completely short-term view and fight each individual fire reactively,” the philanthropist said. “We also have to do fire abatement.” The combined focus on immediate relief and long-term policy change could serve as a model for other funders.
